Bike lanes on Laura Street?

Postby fsu813 » Sun Jan 29, 2012 6:52 pm

Just got back from a meeting with the Jacksonville Bicycle Coalition, a talented group of bicycle/pedestrain advocates who happen to meet at Three Layers regularly. http://jaxbikecoalition.org/

One idea/topic that was briefly discussed was having dedicated bike lanes on Laura Street, from Downtown up to 8th Street.

Any thoughts or feedback on that?

I am not sure it will work north of 1st street. Is Laura Street wide enough? How would it affect parking. I am also not sure it is necessary. South of 1st Street would make a lot of sense.

FWIW: I think the main danger zones are the union street / state street intersections. Well marked bicycle turn lanes may help.

No bike lanes on Laura North of 1st. People park their cars on the street on both sides of Laura. We like it that way. If bike lanes were added, cars would be ticketed for parking alongside the curb blocking the bike lanes.

Besides - contrary to rumors Laura is a relatively quiet street and not a highway. Why would you even need bike lanes on Laura?

The proposed greenway trail through Springfield's parks could serve the same purpose and would be safer for cyclists.

Bike lanes don't have to be positioned immediately next to the curb.

I'm not sure the street is wide enough to support bike lanes. I like Miss Fixit's suggestion of routing them through the parks.
