For everyone who has been watching the community garden being built at 1425 Laura, I wanted to give you an update (I didn't know the forum was back up, so sorry for any delay!). We have built the beds on the north half of the lot and the gardeners will be lining and filling their beds in the next few weeks with donated soil and compost. We are having another fundraiser on New Year's Day to raise the money for water and the bed lumber on the south half of the lot. If you are interested in donating, becoming a member, or simply volunteering, just send me an email. avsearle@gmail.com

We have arranged a seed starting class for the gardeners in January. A big thank you to the extension office for their time, Johnny's seeds for the donation of the recyclable Dot Pots, American the Beautiful and the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange for the seed donations to help get the gardeners started.

There are a few plots left if anyone is interested in being a gardener. The annual fee is $35 and there is a Membership Agreement that needs to be signed, just shoot me an email if you are interested. avsearle@gmail.com

Here are some pics.

UPDATE: JEA has installed the irrigation meter (just a disclosure: they charge $1400 for this, which I think is OUTRAGEOUS for a community beautification project!!!! But I am digressing...). We are trying to get together this Wednesday, January 27, afternoon to install the faucet and 4 additional beds on the southside of the lot. We need more money for the back fence and other plots, so if people, businesses, or organizations are interested in donating, please shoot me an email avsearle@gmail.com

Almost all of the plots are reserved. If you are thinking about it, go ahead and reserve it - there are just a few left!

We got in a new donation of AWESOME seed varieties from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange to give away FREE to all of our gardeners. So exicted to try them out!

February 20th class is in the process of being set up - Cleaning Green - how to put together green cleaning supplies from your garden. If you are interested, let me know, you don't need to be a garden member to attend. avsearle@gmail.com

We put out the first addition of our bi-monthly newsletter, Sustainable Springfield. If you are interested in receiving a copy, please shoot me an email and I will get you on the list. avsearle@gmail.com

Personal note: my direct seeds are coming up at the garden - lettuces, broccoli, and icicle radishes. My seeds I started for warm weather transplanting are coming up at home too including a PURPLE heirloom tomato! YEAH!

Thanks Amanda! My seeds are growing fast too, I'm really excited to put them into our plot.

Are we still doing the City Kidz fundraiser next weekend? I made a note on my calendar, but I'm not sure if it's definitely happening.
